Mixer Ground Loop / Audio Noise

Sunday, February 07, 2010 12:34pm

Noise from audio equipment caused from electrical interference from multiple grounded devices seems to be a common problem when combining computers with audio components. These audio components such as audio mixers, amplifiers, and effects units may not even have a ground wire.

a simple solution

If you have ground loop line noise on a basic system such as a computer, mixer and amplifier system, here are some basic tools to diagnose and remove your line noise problems.

Ground Loop Isolator $16.99

Used allot in car audio, this device with stereo RCA's, is used in-line into your amplifier input or output device. This small device will save you from your ground noise in a simple system nine times out of ten.

Non-Contact Voltage Tester $11.50

It is possible your ground loop noise isn't coming from a ground loop at all. It could just be interference from another device in the proximity. This little 'pen' detects currents down to 50mV, allowing you to move offending devices away from each other. Even if the ground loop isolator works perfectly for you, this low voltage tester is fun to play with, and great to have in your tool kit.

Receptacle Tester / Improper Wiring Indicator $8.99

This little tester is just nice to have if you set your equipment up at different locations. Is your noise problem coming from your power source? Find out. This plug will detect an open ground, open neutral, open hot, hot/ground reverse, hot/neutral reverse, or correct wiring from your source power.
