Sound Stuttering When Network Activity Occurs

Windows 7, Vista

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 10:00pm

On Windows 7 and Windows Vista, system audio, mp3 audio, or audio from video or movies,
can suddenly suffer from stuttering and crackling when network activity is active.

This issue can be resolved, depending on the source of the problem.

Solution 1

Some Firewall software realtime scanning seems to cause sound stuttering for some reason.

I had this problem with Zone Alarm Firewall - switching to Comondo Firewall fixed the problem

Solution 2

Same as 1, some Antivirus software realtime scanning seems to cause sound stuttering for some reason.

Disabling, then re-enabling the feature in this software sometimes solves the problem.

Solution 3

from How to Fix the Vista Network Speed Issue While Playing Sound

Disabling Multimedia Class Scheduler

a) Open regedit and go to:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Audiosrv

Open DependOnService and delete MMCSS

b) Open Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services / Multimedia Class Scheduler

Set the startup type to Disabled

Reboot

Solution 4

from DMA reverts to PIO / The stuttering DVD drive or the lame hard disk

Re-enabling DMA

a) Save this FILE and run it. Then reboot.

b) Refer to the source article for other manual procedures.
